3 MAIN STEPS TO BLOOD TESTING

1. Always start out with a visual inspection
Visual Inspections include the aid of oblique lighting with a flashlight to locate stains on dark substrates.

2. Examine potential blood staining under the microscope
Under the microscope we are looking for 3 visual characteristics of blood (may not always see all 3):
1. Red-brown color
2. A shine/sheen on the surface
3. Crackling

3) Chemical Testing
Transfer a small visible amount of staining to a swab or filter paper
My lab uses the Kastle-Meyer test for blood that consists of 2 steps
(i) First, Add 2-3 drops of reduced Phenolphthalein. Next, hydrogen peroxide

(ii) Add drops of hydrogen peroxide to sample. If it turns pink within 10 seconds blood presumed to be present.

Results: Pink colour indicates the presence of blood.
