Karl Landsteiner
(June 14, 1868- June 26, 1943)

Introduction
Karl Landsteiner (born June 14, 1868, Vienna, Austrian Empire [Austria]—died June 26, 1943, New York, He was an Austrian American immunologist and pathologist. After receiving his M.D. in 1891 from the University of Vienna, Landsteiner studied Organic chemistry.with many notable scientists in Europe, including the German chemist, Emil Fischer.

Contributions:
1.Discovered ABO blood groups (1901)
2. Discovered Rh factor (1940)
3. Pioneered immunology research(1900s-1930s)
4. Identified the poliovirus.(1909)

Awards:
1. Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1930)
2. Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research (1946, posthumously)
3. Numerous honorary doctorates and scientific memberships.
