Introduction:-
The technique of matching fingerprints against a database of known and unknown prints in the fingerprint identification system using a computer is known as automated fingerprint identification. Law enforcement organizations mostly employ automated fingerprint identification systems (AFIS) for criminal identification purposes. The most crucial use of AFS is when identifying a suspect or connecting them to other unsolved crimes.
HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT:
• The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) developed the first AFIS in 1974 It would be too costly to keep entire photos, so it only included the minutiae, or the most significant details of a fingerprint.
• These days, a single eyeblink can accomplish the same search in less time. The FBI continues to operate the ABIS. the bureau calls it IAFIS (the I stand for Integrated).
• First Innovatrics launched its first AFIS in 2009. It now supports faces and irises in addition to fingerprints and palm prints. It is known as the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) in this instance.
FUNCTION & WORKING
Law enforcement organizations mostly employ automated fingerprint identification systems (AFIS) for criminal identification purposes. The most crucial use of AFS is when identifying a suspect or connecting them to other unsolved crimes.
The chart below represents the working hierarchy of AFIS:
- Capturing
An individual provides a 10-print set to a fingerprint scanner.
- Extracting
From the prints, the system extracts distinctive traits and compresses them into a binary code.
- Comparing
Using sophisticated algorithms, the system compares the extracted features to a database of records
- Matching
- Reporting
When a match is discovered, the system produces a report including the results, the methodology, and any pertinent matches.
