HISTORY
• SWGDOC began in 1997 as TWGDOC (Technical Working Group for Questioned Documents), it was renamed as SWGDOC in 1999, and was reorganized in 2001. From 2000 to 2012 SWGDOC published their standards through American Society for Testing and Materials International (now simply ASTM International).
• SWGDOC is composed of private examiners and government examiners from local, state, and federal laboratories throughout the United States.
• In 2012 SWGDOC stopped publishing their standards through ASTM and began self-publishing their standards as is the practice for nearly every other SWG group.

• The group encourages and supports research in the field of document examination. This includes developing new methodologies, improving existing techniques, and addressing emerging issues in forensic document analysis.
• SWGDOC facilitates communication and collaboration among forensic document examiners, researchers, and other stakeholders. This helps to ensure that the field stays current with technological advancements and scientific developments.
Working of SWGDOC:
• SWGDOC is composed of forensic document examiners, researchers, and experts in the field. Members are often selected based on their expertise and contributions to the field of document examination.
• The group holds regular meetings to discuss ongoing issues, review practices, and update guidelines. These meetings provide a platform for members to share knowledge, address challenges, and collaborate on developing new standards.
• SWGDOC may establish subcommittees or working groups to focus on specific areas within document examination, such as handwriting analysis or ink analysis. These smaller groups work on specialized tasks and report their findings to the main SWGDOC body.
• SWGDOC publishes guidelines, best practices, and recommendations for forensic document examination. These documents are typically available to forensic professionals through the SWGDOC website or other official channels.
• SWGDOC guidelines and recommendations are open to feedback from the forensic community. Based on this feedback, the group may revise its documents to reflect new developments and ensure they remain relevant and effective.
• SWGDOC’s standards and guidelines are used by forensic document examiners to ensure their practices meet legal and scientific requirements. These standards help in the admissibility of document evidence in legal proceedings.
• SWGDOC is involved in educational outreach and dissemination of information related to document examination. This includes organizing workshops, seminars, and training sessions to keep forensic professionals informed about the latest practices and technologies.
