In October 2025 in Delhi, forensic science student Amrita Chauhan, with her ex-boyfriend Sumit Kashyap (an LPG distributor) and another accomplice, was arrested for the murder of her live-in partner, UPSC aspirant Ramkesh Meena. The trio attempted to disguise the murder as a gas cylinder explosion, drawing inspiration from crime shows and leveraging their respective expertise.
The motive
According to police, Amrita confessed that the motive for the murder was Meena's refusal to delete private and intimate videos of her that he had recorded and stored on his hard drive. Amrita, feeling humiliated and betrayed, confided in her ex-boyfriend, Sumit, who then helped her plot revenge.
The murder plot
The plan was orchestrated to look like a tragic accident involving an exploding gas cylinder.
In the early hours of October 6, 2025, the trio went to Meena's flat in Gandhi Vihar.
There, they allegedly thrashed and strangled Meena. Amrita then poured ghee, oil, and wine on his body to fuel the fire.
Using his knowledge as an LPG distributor, Sumit placed a gas cylinder near Meena's head, opened the valve, and ignited it. Before fleeing, Amrita locked the flat's iron gate from the inside.
The trio stole Meena's laptop and the hard drive containing the videos to eliminate evidence.
The gas cylinder exploded about an hour after they left, completely burning the victim.
How the crime was exposed
Initially, the incident was believed to be an accidental fire. However, the police grew suspicious due to inconsistencies in the burn patterns discovered by forensic experts. A deeper investigation followed:
CCTV footage revealed two masked men and a woman entering the building and leaving minutes before the explosion.
Using technical surveillance and call records, police were able to track Amrita and the accomplices to their native city of Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh.
All three were subsequently arrested, and Amrita confessed to the crime.
The hard drive was recovered and reportedly contains videos of over 15 women.
