INTRODUCTION
The Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) is a DNA database system used by law enforcement agencies to identify criminals using DNA evidence. It was developed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States. CODIS enables investigators to compare DNA profiles obtained from crime scenes with profiles stored in a national database, helping to identify suspects and link crimes.CODIS is one of the most important tools in modern forensic science, as it allows rapid DNA comparison and assists in solving criminal cases

HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT
The development of CODIS reflects the advancement of DNA technology in criminal investigations:
1980s: DNA profiling began to be used in forensic investigations.
1990: The FBI began developing CODIS software to manage DNA data.
1998: The National DNA Index System (NDIS) was officially launched.
2000s: CODIS expanded with millions of DNA profiles from offenders and crime scenes.
Present: CODIS helps solve thousands of criminal cases each year worldwide.

KEY FUNCTIONS
1. DNA Profile Storage
CODIS stores DNA profiles from different sources such as:
• Convicted offenders
• Arrested suspects
• Crime scene evidence
• Missing persons and unidentified human remains.

2. STR Analysis
DNA profiles are generated using Short Tandem Repeat (STR) markers. STR regions vary among individuals, making them ideal for human identification.

3. Database Comparison
The system automatically compares newly uploaded DNA profiles with existing profiles in the database.

4. DNA Matching (DNA Hit)
If two DNA profiles match, CODIS generates a “DNA hit.” This indicates a possible connection between a suspect and a crime scene.

5. Linking Crimes
CODIS can link multiple crime scenes if the same DNA profile appears in different cases, helping investigators identify serial offenders.

ACHIEVEMENTS OF CODIS
CODIS has significantly improved forensic investigations:
• Helped solve thousands of criminal cases worldwide.
• Linked serial offenders involved in multiple crimes.
• Assisted in identifying missing persons and unknown victims. • Strengthened the reliability of forensic evidence in court.
CASE STUDY
One famous case solved using CODIS involved the “Grim Sleeper” serial killer in Los Angeles. For many years, police were unable to identify the killer responsible for several murders. Investigators later obtained DNA evidence from the crime scenes and entered it into the CODIS database. In 2010, a DNA match was discovered through CODIS using a technique called familial DNA searching. The DNA matched a relative of the suspect, which led police to Lonnie David Franklin Jr. After further investigation and DNA testing, Franklin was confirmed as the killer and arrested. CODIS helped link him to multiple murders that had remained unsolved for decades.

CONCLUSION
The Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) is a powerful tool in forensic science that allows quick and accurate comparison of DNA profiles. It plays a crucial role in identifying criminals, solving complex cases, and supporting the criminal justice system.
