Introduction
• A person can use drugs to alter someone’s self-defense capability or decision-making in order to perpetrate a sexual assault. Knowing the most common date rape drugs and their side effects can help prevent or stop sexual violence.
• More than 11 million women are the survivors of rape under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Some of the common date rape drugs are as follows:
1. Alcohol—Most popular and most readily available drug Alcohol lowers a person’s inhibitions, making them less aware of their surroundings. Additionally, people readily consume the substance. It can also spur aggressive behavior by the willing to commit sexual violence, increasing their willingness to harm others.

2. Benzodiazepines—Benzodiazepines are known as anti-anxiety drugs. These drugs are used by criminals for sexual assault because it makes the person sleepy. The most common drug that is used for this purpose is Rohypnol (flunitrazepam). This class of drug makes a person feel very relaxed and may cause loss of muscle control. He/she may lose consciousness or feel dizzy and confused. After the rohypnol wears off, the individual has no recollection of anything that happened the day before. Rohypnol is available in pill form, but it also has the capability to be dissolved in a liquid. Identification of this drug is easy because it changes blue in color when dissolved in liquid.

3. Ketamine: It is an anesthetic drug that gives relaxation to mind and body. It acts immediately; the person cannot defend himself or herself from the perpetrator. This drug is fatal in higher doses because it can cause breathing problems. It is white powder, and it can change the taste of the drink. So perpetrators will mix this drug in a strong drink to avoid its presence in the drink.

4. Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) is a substance that comes from a neurotransmitter found in our bodies. Neurotransmitters are substances that aid in sensitizing the body by serving as a link between the brain and the neurons. It slows down activity in the central nervous system, making users confused and partially unconscious. Low doses lead to nausea and vomiting. Higher doses lead to unconsciousness, seizures, and difficulty seeing, and the person can't recall what happened last night. This drug is lethal.

Recognizing the signs of being drugged
1. Feeling or acting drunk despite a person not having any alcohol.
2. Feeling confused or disoriented.
3. Losing consciousness.
4. Not remembering how someone got somewhere.
5. Hard to remember anything after drinking.

8. Discovering torn clothes.

Things to keep in mind if you are under the influence of drugs
1. Don’t waste time finding perpetrators or researching whether their symptoms match those of any drug.
2. Promptly inform a reliable companion and relocate to a secure location.
3. In case of an emergency, contact 911 for assistance.
4. The next day, emergency medical care (drugs that people use for sexual assault usually leaves the body within 12-72 hours, leaving no traces)
5. To preserve evidence of having committed sexual assault, a person should avoid showering or bathing until after the examination is complete.
